Blair - look, it's perfectly obvious

From the same BBC News story:

  • "He announced in September 2004 he would serve a 'full third term' before stepping down"
  • "'I've said I'm not going to go on and on and on and said I'll leave ample time for my successor.'"
  • "'If what they are really worried about is timing I think most of you can look at what I have said and draw conclusions about that.'"

Well, I've been trying to work it out, and the only conclusion that makes sense is that he's planning an Enabling Act that would allow him to serve a full third term, then abolish elections, and thereby give "ample time" to his successor. At the risk of invoking Godwin, I can't see any other explanation that fulfils the above three statements. Can you?

Not unless his successor is going to be John Redwood and we're looking at an invasion of the body snatchers style plot here, no.
