Vector contours

If anyone's managed to successfully generate vector contours from SRTM data on a Mac... I'd love to hear from them.

DEM2TOPO looks perfect (requires X11 and the IDL Virtual Machine). Unfortunately, partway into processing, it always stops with a bizarre "GET_KBRD: input must be a tty" alert. No idea why.

gdal_contour also looked promising, but I can't get anywhere with it. In response to (say) gdal_contour -a elev w020n90.tif test.shp 10.0, it invariably pops up the standard helpful "Usage: " text and refuses to go any further.

My head hurts and I'm giving up for now.
