PC Plod, PC Plod, he eats flies and sets everything in Times New Roman

I got zapped the other week for running a red light on the Gloucester bypass. This isn't going to be one of those whingeing motorists' rants, because the camera got me bang to rights (guv) - and besides, if I was going to rant about the inequity of transport policy in this case, my target would be the appalling Ernest Marples for closing all the railways in the Brecon Beacons, from where we were returning.

Sorry, where was I?

Ah yes, traffic light cameras. I have no problem with being caught by the camera... but where I do have a problem is that Gloucestershire Constabulary appear to set all their correspondence in Times New Roman.

Someone who uses Times New Roman is someone who has not even given a microsecond of thought to the presentation of their work. It is unimaginative, uninspiring, un...derpants. I hate 'ugly font'.

Even Comic Sans is a beacon of light in comparison. Though I did encounter someone recently who was planning to set a print publication in Verdana. Firing squad! Now!

I think it's unfair to say they gave no thought to the presentation: after all, someone must have decided that the words 'of' and 'the' were important enough to be in shouty-caps...

Re: previous entries, have you notice that O'Reilly are putting out a book on open source GIS / mapping tools this month?

Indeed - a couple of co-conspirators on Openstreetmap are behind it (not that, as yet, I've had anywhere near as much time as I'd like to devote to OSM). It's nestling between Durufle's organ works and Joel Spolsky on my Amazon wishlist. :)
