The Orchestral Hergest Ridge

So I finally found a copy. Hergest Ridge is arguably Mike Oldfield's finest album, before it all started going wrong. I've always thought it sounds a bit like Vaughan Williams' Pastoral Symphony, and had consequently been keen to get a copy of the never-released orchestral version.

It's here, on a page of rare Oldfield MP3s (free registration required, and you'll need to rename the .mpga files to .mp3.). And I guess it's ok, sounding on occasion like a better-than-average film soundtrack. (Speaking of which, why isn't Thomas Newman's marvellous Lemony Snicket OST on iTMS UK yet?)

But it's very clearly the result of someone (David Bedford) transcribing the original record for orchestra, rather than a genuine reworking. Sometimes this works; mostly it's rather uninspiring.

The work has a lot of scope for a better reworking. Perhaps an Electronic Hergest Ridge, in the style of William Orbit's Pieces in a Modern Style. Or it would work really, really well for church organ. Maybe I should have a go.

It appears that you can download the stand-out track (Drive Away) from the Lemony Snicket soundtrack here. I didn't tell you that.
